South Baltimore Community Land Trust
The South Baltimore Community Land Trust (SBCLT) received its first-ever national CCHD grant in 2021. It has received a total of four grants, including its most recent grant of $25,000 for the 2024-2025 grant cycle, for a total of $170,000.

At issue is that the SBCLT was co-founded by a Socialist.
In 2022, Nicole Fabricant wrote a book titled, “Fighting to Breathe.” In the Author’s bio, Fabricant is identified as both a co-founder of SBCLT and one of its organizers.

On 15 April 2021, Fabricant spoke “in Support of DSA’s PRO Act Campaign“ for the the Prince George’s County DSA Branch.

Fabricant’s X account is littered with messages promoting socialism and socialist causes. A few examples will suffice.
On 5 June 2019, Fabricant referenced the Leadership School of another longtime CCHD grantee called the United Workers Association. Posting photos from the class, she stated that the students were learning about Karl Marx and “the seeds of resistance.”

On 5 May 2018, Fabricant stated how overjoyed she was to have her daughter ask her what a revolution is on Karl Marx’s 200th birthday.

On 4 April 2020, Fabricant shared an article from the Marxist publication, ROAR Magazine titled, “The Future will be Socialist – or it will not be at all.”

On 30 November 2019, Fabricant celebrated the revival of Socialism in Seattle.

On 17 June 2021, Fabricant posted an article from the Communist publication Jacobin Magazine on “What it Means to be a Marxist.”

On 24 November 2019, Fabricant proclaimed her wish that “we dance our way into socialism!”

Given all of this, it comes as no surprise that Meleny Thomas, the executive director for SBCLT, participated in an event 12 January 2024 at the Marxist book store called Red Emma’s.

On 14 July 2019, Meleny Thomas promoted an event announced by the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

It’s worth noting here that both Nicole Fabricant and Meleny Thomas have worked together on a variety of projects, including when Thomas was working for UWA. On 3 November 2018, Thomas and Fabricant conducted a presentation on vacant homes.

On 1 April 2019, Thomas (then working for UWA) and Fabricant conducted another presentation on Community Land Trusts.

Conclusion
There is no mistaking the distinct operation of socialist ideals through SBCLT. It’s co-founder is an out and proud Marxist who clearly views CLTs as a vehicle for promoting the spread of Socialism. The current executive director, Meleny Thomas, worked for the Marxist UWA, collaborates with the Marxist co-founder of SBCLT, and has herself participated in events at the Marxist bookstore Red Emma’s and promoted an event announced by the Party for Socialism and Liberation. There is nothing about this organization that is not infected with the evil ideology of Karl Marx, and as such, it should never have received Catholic funds.
